Graduation Speech: The Best Four Years of My Life! :: Graduation Speech, Commencement Address
Hi, my name is Pat and I would like to start today by thanking the seniors of 2012 for choosing me to speak today. It is truly my honor. You know, it is really strange how quickly time passes, after spending my whole childhood wishing I was an adult, now here we are and it's a little hard to grasp. It feels like just yesterday I was standing here in the same position at eighth grade graduation. Ahh, middle school, such a joyous time for all of us, free of maturity and not a care in the world. The biggest decisions I ever had to make then was deciding which group to stand with at passing time and choosing which shirt from my extensive collection of Stussy and No Feat apparel to wear. We were all naive to the danger that lurked just around the corner. We were unaware that the carefree world we lived in was about to come crashing to the ground in a blazing inferno of real school work and responsibility ... otherwise known as high school. I am only kidding. It's just when you're young it is easy to get caught up in the here and now, and hard to look to the future. I thought high school would never end and now here we are on the brink of having to go out into the world and actually support ourselves!? I now feel like I never really appreciated my time here and never realized what a valuable experience it would be for me. I spent so much time complaining about high school, I never really had anytime left over to just enjoy myself. There are so many experiences from high school we will all carry with us through out our whole lives and will ultimately help determine what kind of person we are. By the time the end of my junior year rolled around I was ready to get away, so I enrolled in the Running Start program. I felt I had outgrown all that school activities had to offer and I wanted to just get on with my life. But as many teachers have clearly demonstrated over the last four years; you never get too old or too mature to have a little fun in high school. It took me this year to realize this. It was around homecoming that I started to feel a little left out.

Language Stereotypes in Television Essay
That 70ââ¬â¢s Show is an American sitcom that ran from 1998-2006. It takes place in 1976-1980 Wisconsin and centers around a group of highschool kids and ends a couple years after their graduation. In a way, the show proves that no matter what the decade, kids behave the same way and have mostly the same stereotypes. There are many characters who have either ethnic or gender stereotypes pinned to them through their language or how they act. The first example is also the main love interest of the show, Eric and Donna. In the later seasons, when the main relationship is more serious, Eric believes that Donnaââ¬â¢s responsibilities when married is to stay at home and take care of the children while he worked. However, Donna, being a feminist, wanted nothing to do with staying home all the time. She wanted to explore the world and work. Another character who exemplifies a female stereotype is Jackie. She is a year younger than everyone else and her language can best be described as often high-pitched and definitely the most girly on the show. She loves pink unicorns and everything stereotypically girly. Many of the male characters can often find her ââ¬Å"annoyingâ⬠because of her overbearing girliness. The most masculine character is Hyde, and through his actions and words he expresses many male stereotypes. He is very direct with what he says and never beats around the bush. If he has a problem with something he will not hesitate to speak up and does seem to be commanding of the other characters, seeming both stronger and smarter than the other men. He uses the word ââ¬Å"manâ⬠often, something that seems to be stereotypical of a guy. He will often use silence to his advantage when necessary. Another character is Fez(basically an acronym for ââ¬Å"Foreign Exchange Studentâ⬠), a dark colored boy whose country of origin is unknown. Being foreign, his language is poor at best since he doesnââ¬â¢t understand certain things that are acceptable in this late 1970ââ¬â¢s teenage American culture, often exploited for laughs. It works because it is typical for someone learning a foreign language that differs from their native language to not make the connection between certain acceptable usages of words. Kelso is the stereotypical idiot who you canââ¬â¢t help but to love. He uses words such as ââ¬Å"manâ⬠and ââ¬Å"dude,â⬠like many other masculine characters typically do. Words ending in ââ¬Å"ingâ⬠are shortened to ââ¬Å"in,â⬠instead of saying ââ¬Å"running,â⬠Kelso will say ââ¬Å"runnin. â⬠Finally, there is Red and Kitty. Kitty speaks with a loving high pitch and is the polar opposite to Redââ¬â¢s stern low voice. These are both stereotypical characters, the father believes he is supposed to be the main provider and the punisher of the children, while the mother should be taking care of the children and comforting them. In the end, there are many stereotypes in television shows and movies. Some are harder to find than others, but if you look enough, they can be very easy to spot.

William Faulkners A Rose for Emily Essay - 1382 Words
Emilyââ¬â¢s Downward Spiral: An Analysis of ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠In William Faulknerââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emily,â⬠the main character of the story is Miss Emily Grierson. To analyze and examine her character, it is almost impossible not to look at the psychological aspect of it. Through the narrative of Faulknerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emily,â⬠Miss Emilyââ¬â¢s behavior and character is revealed as outright strange from any average standard of characters. A few days after they lay Miss Emilyââ¬â¢s body to rest, the townspeople of Jefferson come to Griersonââ¬â¢s home to open one particular room upstairs, which has not been seen or entered into for the past several years. This situation perhaps helps readers understand how Miss Emily is trying to cope of all the burden and pressures of great expectations that others have of her. While most individuals can handle this kind of stress, Miss Emily unfortunately is unable to develop healthy, adaptive coping mechanisms. Another glimpse of her character is when the sheriff office attempts to collect taxes, Emily tells them ââ¬Å"see Colonel Sartorisâ⬠(33), who had been dead almost ten years. ââ¬Å"I have no taxes in Jeffersonâ⬠reasserts Emily (33). Despite many attempts to collect taxes, Emily simply continues to ref use to cooperate with the town authorities. This observation of Miss Emilys behavior is telling us how irrational and inappropriate she is when she interacts with other people. Another episode of her erratic behavior occurs when Judge Stevens, the new town mayor, receives several complaints from the neighbors that a powerful, terrible odor is originating from Emilyââ¬â¢s property and ordered by the neighbors to ââ¬Å"send her word to have her place cleaned upâ⬠(33). This is another hint that Emily is becoming separated from her community and is totally unable to relate to other people in an appropriate matter. In the beginning, the townspeople ââ¬Å"did not say she was crazy then.â⬠(34). They sympathize with Miss Emily just after she loses her father, and just after the man whom the townsfolk believed she would marry deserts her. ââ¬Å"PoorShow MoreRelatedWilliam Faulkners A Rose for Emily1600 Words à |à 7 Pages William Faulkners A Rose for Emilyà is set in the small southern town of Jefferson during the early decades of the twentieth century . Compare and contrast the extent to which both novels comment and criticise on the societies which they are set in. We are introduced to both novels in the 1920s elite society where both authors; Waugh and Fitzgerald are from an upper class society. Fitzgerald cultivates the character Jay Gatsby who we perceive purely from Nick who is an onlooker throughout the novella. Readers interpret Gatsbyââ¬â¢s social structure as a triangle and we learn to commiserate him whereas Waugh invents the character Paul Pennyfeather who is a naà ¯ve, passive character and is in the structure of a circle. The one factor that is apparent throughout the novels is that society determines their social structure. Fitzgerald is criticising society in the sense that the elite are solely dependant on their money despite them being miserable and this could refer to the saying ââ¬Ëmoney doesnââ¬â¢t by happinessââ¬â¢ which is very true to such cases as Gatsbyââ¬â¢s.
